Economic empowerment
A programme that begins with seeds and ends with a market — because a harvest with nowhere to go is not an income.
Most smallholder farming advice stops at the field. ARF's agriculture programme is built on the observation that growing more is only useful if there is somewhere to sell it, and that a farm without reliable water cannot plan a season at all.
So the programme runs the length of the chain: inputs and training to the household, irrigation from the water programme, organisation into groups, and a commercial route to market through a separate company created for the purpose.
It is worth being clear about who is who. African Reflections Foundation is the non-profit that works with the farmers. TanzPro Greens Ltd is a commercial company that handles production scaling and market access. They collaborate; they are not the same organisation, and this site does not blur them.
The number of greenhouses currently operating is being confirmed with the Foundation: its 2024 report gives two different figures.
Seeds, manure and tools reach participating households — particularly women and youth — rather than cash alone.

TanzPro Greens Ltd provides the commercial route, with the aim of fair prices for out-grower groups.
The outcome the chain exists for: household income that does not depend on a single harvest or a single buyer.
The Foundation’s organic farming work began at Kisele in Mkuranga with two women’s groups — Matokeo, meaning “results”, with 22 women, and Jipemoyo, meaning “take courage”, with 18. Both groups appear in The Village Heart, which is why this programme can be traced across a decade rather than asserted.

ARF reported supporting 25 groups of smallholder farmers, among them Kuchile, Kinene and Mwanzo Mgumu. TanzPro Greens Ltd was formed to scale production, improve quality and broaden market access.
One of the women who led those early groups was Hadija, who appears in The Village Heart preparing doughnuts before dawn to pay school fees. ARF's later reporting records her leading two farming groups. It is one of the few places where a decade of a single person's work can be followed through the Foundation's own documents.
